More work needs to be done to make the number of minority-owned dealerships representative of the U.S. car-buying market, dealer Damon Lester told the audience at the Automotive News Retail Forum: NADA on Thursday.
At the end of 2022, the minority dealer body totaled just more than 1,300. Hispanics made up the largest share of that group, owning just more than 500 dealerships, then Blacks with about 290, Asians with about 280 and the remainder owned by Native Americans.
“There’s been some year-over-year growth,” Lester said. “The D&I push over the past couple years has definitely helped. We want to help in this environment now with this big consolidation we’re seeing and scaling [that] a lot of larger groups are doing. We continue to see year-over-year expansion.”
