Mazda leans into plug-in hybrids with flagship CX-90 crossover

Mazda's new flagship three-row CX-90 crossover steps into the lineup to replace the CX-9, offering more space for passengers and cargo and two powertrain options — including the brand's first plug-in hybrid electric vehicle in the U.S.

The 2024 CX-90 sits on the Japanese automaker's new larger platform, tuned for enhanced driving dynamics with a front-engine, rear-wheel-bias layout.

Mazda is leaning into plug-in hybrid electric vehicles ahead of electric vehicles, unlike many of its mainstream and luxury rivals. Following the CX-90, it will launch the CX-70 five-seater, which also will use the new platform and offer a PHEV variant.

"A growing customer base that's interested in electric wants to contribute to the environmental benefits it provides but maybe aren't quite ready to take the plunge on pure battery," Jeff Guyton, CEO of Mazda North American operations, told Automotive News.

The CX-90's plug-in hybrid powertrain, which combines a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with an electric motor powered by a 17.8-kilowatt-hour battery, produces 323 hp and 369 pound-feet of torque.

An available 3.3-liter inline six-cylinder engine delivers 340 hp and 369 pound-feet of torque. The gasoline-powered crossover also brings a pinch of electrification, featuring a mild-hybrid system called M-Hybrid Boost for extra fuel efficiency.

Mazda did not release fuel economy ratings for the gasoline engine model or all-electric range for the PHEV, but Guyton said both will be "competitive" among similarly sized crossovers.

He expects the CX-90 to appeal to shoppers in the mainstream and premium market. "Volume competitors would include the Toyota Highlander and reaching toward a Volvo XC90," he said.

Guyton said the PHEV variant will be especially useful for parents wanting to dabble in electrification.

"When I think about my friends in Los Angeles, they're going to Costco, they're taking their kids to school, they're going to soccer practice — most of those daily things can be done on pure electric," he said, adding that most CX-90 buyers will have access to convenient charging at home or at work.

The CX-90 couples Mazda's signature athletic styling with longer, wider, more aggressive proportions and curvier body lines. The crossover appears larger than the CX-9, which has one of the smallest third rows in the segment, but Mazda did not disclose interior dimensions.

Family-friendly features available include third-row USB-C charging ports and air conditioning vents, as well as upgraded interior lighting. A 12.3-inch center display featuring physical buttons below for climate control and an armrest-adjacent volume knob on the center console are designed to be driver-centric.

The CX-90 goes on sale this spring with pricing to be announced closer to launch.
