Fleet-focused Chevy Silverado EV to debut with 450-mile range

Chevrolet's first electric pickup will have a longer range when it launches this year than previously estimated.

The 2024 Chevy Silverado EV work truck, intended for fleet customers, will have an EPA-estimated 450 miles of range on a full charge, according to Rory Harvey, General Motors' incoming president of North America. That exceeds GM's earlier estimate of 400 miles. The truck will start at $79,800 including shipping.

"We think that is a real winning proposition," Harvey told reporters Thursday. "We previously announced that it was going to be a 400-mile target, so the team did just an exceptional job in terms of being able to extend that up to 450 miles."

The work truck version of the electric full-size pickup is set to launch this spring. A work truck with a GM-estimated 350 miles of range and a starting price of $74,800 will follow, as will other versions of the work truck line starting as low as $41,595 including shipping, Chevy said.

The fully loaded RST First Edition for retail buyers is scheduled to arrive this fall, with a GM-estimated 400 miles of range and a price of $106,695. Other retail trims such as Trail Boss also are planned.

"With respect to the work truck, which is predominantly a fleet vehicle, we believe that that'll give us a competitive advantage in terms of those fleet customers," Harvey said. "It's one of those that is optionality based upon customer need. And I think the key there is that we will be able to provide customer choice moving forward."

Harvey, currently vice president of global Cadillac, will succeed Steve Carlisle as president of North America on June 1, when Carlisle retires. John Roth, currently global vice president of Customer Care and Aftersales, will take over Harvey's role at Cadillac.

GM's continued transition toward electric vehicles will be a critical area of focus for company leaders this year. In addition to the Silverado EV, Chevy is launching electric versions of the Blazer and Equinox crossovers this year, while GMC is preparing to bring its Sierra EV full-size pickup to market next year, and Cadillac will start production of its hand-built Celestiq electric sedan in December.

"I sit in many of the meetings with the other brands. There's a huge degree of interaction, cooperation and consistency across the brands," Harvey told reporters about his new role. "We've got the momentum across all of the brands here in North America. So for me, really, it's how do we work the transformation?

"How do we maximize the transformation? How do we continue with the positive momentum that we've got, and how do we actually exploit the new product launches that we've got to their maximum ability?"

As part of its electric transition, GM plans to discontinue the Chevy Bolt EV and EUV at the end of the year. The Bolt, introduced in 2016 as GM's first mass-market EV, is built on older battery technology and has amassed U.S. sales of more than 161,000.

The Silverado EV and other EVs the automaker has in the pipeline will use the next-generation Ultium platform.

"It's been in the portfolio for seven years now. And if you looked at our offering going forward, we will have a number of EV entries that will be very competitive," Harvey said of the Bolt. "It's like any vehicle — it has a life cycle."
